Who we are

Hepatitis Alliance of Ghana (HAG) is a registered Non- Governmental Organisation in Ghana. HAG provides a comprehensive range of viral hepatitis related services, including advocacy, awareness creation, capacity building of healthcare providers, support services for persons with viral hepatitis and hepatitis related research.

The organisation has been in operation since 2008 and was incorporated in 2016 by the Registrar General Department of Ghana under the Companies Act 1963 (Act 179). Our network includes over 5,000 healthcare providers, including Physicians, Nurses, Midwives, Physician Assistants, Biomedical scientists, Public Health Specialists, and Researchers.

Further, approximately 2000 people with hepatitis B and C are members of our support group (i.e., Hepatitis Support Group-Ghana): The foundation is currently driving three projects with specific target groups, namely the Youth Hepafocus Project, the Zero Newborn Hepa-infection Project, and the Help-4-Hep B & C Project.

Our Team

Dr. Charles Ampong Adjei (Executive Director)

Dr. Adjei is an experienced public health specialist and a researcher. His research focuses primarily on communicable diseases, particularly viral Hepatitis. He uses the intervention mapping approach in designing, implementing, and evaluating health-related interventions that are culturally sensitive. His contribution to Hepatitis prevention and control in Ghana is enormous as evidenced by his countless involvement in viral Hepatitis educational programmes and policy dialogue.

He serves on the advisory committee of the Ghana national viral hepatitis control programme, and he is a key member of the national team working on hepatitis C elimination in Ghana. He has contributed to global discussions on hepatitis. Key amongst them is his role in evidence synthesis on hepatitis patients preferences for treatment in Africa that informed the World Health Organization guideline review. Dr. Adjei won the 2022 Hepatitis Elimination Champion award, overseen by the Coalition for Global Hepatitis Elimination (USA) and the Taskforce for Global Health (USA).

He has published research articles in peer reviewed journals and presented scientific papers at conferences in the United States, Canada, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands, to mention a few. He believes that hepatitis can be eliminated when political will to invest in hepatitis increases at the national level and hepatitis funding is prioritised at the global level.
